Fall 2016 Events

Women in Politics

WSSA is proud to share the details of our most recent event, Women in Politics on Sept. 27th. With over 150 students, faculty, and community members in attendance, the standing-room only event was a huge success.

The event originated as a panel, featuring four distinguished political activists and public servants. Our panel included Sandra Ruiz, the first woman ever elected to the council of Doral, Juan Carlos Espinosa, Ph.D. and Associate Dean and Fellow of the Honors college here at FIU, Myra Macias, the political director for the Florida Democratic Party, and Justin Klecha, the Deputy Director of SAVE (South Florida’s LGBTQ advocacy organization).

In addition to the panel, we were honored to host three members of the “Mothers of the Movement” initiative. Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon Martin’s mother, Sabrina Reed-Veal, Sandra Bland’s mother, and Gwen Carr all made an emotional, timely, and poignant case for getting involved in not only federal, but local politics. We were humbled by their inspirational message and your turnout.
